Behind every cup of coffee are lands, communities and producers who work every day to grow quality coffee. At Café William, we choose to work with cooperatives that put quality, people and the environment at the heart of what they do.
Organic and Fairtrade certifications go far beyond a label on a bag. They set standards for agricultural and commercial practices while helping create better conditions for coffee-growing communities.
What Is Organic Coffee?
Organic certification sets standards for how crops are grown, including agricultural practices and the substances that can be used.
For producers, organic farming encourages practices that protect soil health, biodiversity and the ecosystems where coffee grows. It also requires knowledge and expertise to protect crops and maintain productivity while working with nature.
Choosing organic coffee means supporting producers who use farming practices that are more mindful of their environment and helping preserve the land where coffee is grown.
What Is Fair Trade Coffee?
Fairtrade certification focuses on another essential aspect of coffee: the conditions under which it is purchased and traded.
The Fairtrade system includes a minimum price that acts as a safety net when market prices fall below that threshold, giving producers greater protection from market fluctuations.
There is also the Fairtrade Premium, an additional amount paid on top of the price of coffee. Producers and workers collectively decide how it will be invested, including in projects related to agriculture, education, healthcare and infrastructure.
Choosing Fairtrade-certified coffee means supporting a model that gives coffee-growing communities greater resources to invest in their priorities and their future.
How Organic and Fair trade Coffee Supports Farming Communities
Behind these certifications are, above all, people and real projects. The cooperatives we work with develop a range of initiatives to support their producers and communities.
ANEI: Supporting Coffee-Growing Communities in Colombia
In Colombia, we notably work with ANEI, an organization that brings together 800 farming families from Indigenous and farming communities in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Serranía del Perijá.
The impact of this work is best understood through the people behind it. In this testimonial, Aurora, Founder and general director at ANEI, shares the organization’s mission and the role coffee plays in building a sustainable future for generations to come.
