Arabica vs. Robusta: Two Distinct Varieties

The Two Pillars of Coffee

When it comes to coffee, two main types of beans take center stage: Arabica and Robusta. They both come from the coffee plant, which produces cherries containing the beans, but they actually grow on different varieties of trees. This key difference has a big impact on the beans' characteristics—affecting everything from taste and aroma to texture and even price.

Arabica Profile

Arabica is what most people think of when they picture a “classic” cup of coffee. It makes up the majority of global coffee production and is mainly grown at higher altitudes, where the conditions are just right for developing its rich flavors. Known for its smooth and mellow taste, Arabica is loved for its delicate notes of fruit, flowers, and even a hint of chocolate.

Arabica beans have less caffeine and a milder bitterness than Robusta, making them smooth, easy to drink, and perfect for those who appreciate a refined, well-balanced coffee experience. An 8 oz cup of Arabica contains about 95 mg of caffeine, making it a great option for anyone who prefers a gentler energy boost or is sensitive to caffeine. Almost 100% of Café William’s coffees come from the Arabica family—except for our Espresso blends, where Robusta plays a special role!

Robusta Profile

Robusta takes a very different path from Arabica. Grown at lower altitudes in hot climates, this hardy plant is naturally more resistant and thrives in a variety of soils. The result? A coffee that’s bold, intense, and packed with earthy, woody flavors—sometimes with a hint of nuttiness.

One of the biggest differences is the caffeine content. Robusta contains almost twice as much caffeine as Arabica, with about 175 mg in an 8 oz cup. That extra kick not only gives it a stronger, more bitter taste but also makes it the go-to choice for those who need a serious energy boost.

You’ll almost always find Robusta beans in Espresso blends, and for good reason! They add body, depth, and that signature thick, caramel-colored crema on top—the key to making stunning latte art. Learn how to make the perfect espresso!

What sets them apart

  • Where They Grow: Arabica thrives in mountainous regions, while Robusta adapts to various soils, including flatlands.
  • Bean Shape: Arabica beans are larger, ovular, and flat, with a distinctive “S” curve at the center. Robusta beans are smaller, rounder, and have a straight line down the middle.
  • Caffeine Content: Robusta packs nearly twice as much caffeine as Arabica.
  • Flavor Profile: Arabica is smooth and mild, whereas Robusta is bold and intense.

Whether you crave the smooth sophistication of Arabica or the bold intensity of Robusta, each brew offers a unique experience. At Café William, we bring you the best of both worlds, ensuring you always enjoy the perfect cup.
