Iced Latte vs Iced Coffee: What’s the Difference?

When summer rolls around, there’s nothing more refreshing than a cold coffee.
Whether you’re into whole beans, filter, brew bags, or capsules, there are so many ways to enjoy your cup over ice. The two most popular options? Iced coffee and iced lattes. They may sound similar, but their preparation, taste, and texture are actually quite different.
Here’s how to tell them apart, how to make both at home, and how to choose the one that fits your style, using fair trade, organic coffee.

What Is Iced Coffee?

Think of iced coffee as a chilled version of your regular filter brew. It’s made the same way: brew your coffee hot, let it cool, then pour it over ice. You can use pre-ground coffee or grind your own beans. Let it cool at room temperature or in the fridge — whatever works. You end up with a light, refreshing drink that keeps the bold edge of hot coffee.
No milk needed (unless you want it), and you can sweeten it if you like.

Café William Tip

For a great iced coffee at home, start with an organic filter coffee like our Awake blend, with its dried fruit and herbal notes.

Why We Love It:

  • Bold, straightforward coffee flavour
  • Light and refreshing with little or no milk
  • Higher in caffeine than a latte
  • No espresso machine needed

What Is an Iced Latte?

An iced latte is a smoother drink. It’s made by pouring a shot of espresso over cold milk (dairy or plant-based) and ice. Add a little maple syrup if you like it sweet. The result is a creamy, velvety drink with a more mellow coffee taste.

Café William Tip

For a great iced latte at home, play with your milk-to espresso ratio until it’s just right for you. Most importantly, use a quality espresso like Vision, with chocolate notes and hints of dark cherry.

Why we love it:

  • Velvety, indulgent texture
  • Great for those who prefer a milder coffee
  • Lower in caffeine than iced coffee, since espresso is a shorter, faster brew
  • Easy to personalize with your favorite milk or a touch of flavour

Both iced coffees and iced lattes are easy to make, satisfying to drink, and perfect for hot days. Whatever your favourite, the key is choosing high-quality, organic, fairtrade coffee, like the ones we roast at Café William
