Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 2 sandwiches

Ingredients

  • 6 slices of white country bread
  • 1/4 cup crème fraîche
  • 2 tsp whole-grain mustard
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 8 slices rosemary ham (or other)
  • 4 slices Gruyère cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Emmental cheese
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

Steps

  1. Mix the cream with the mustards.

  2. For each Montecristo:
Spread one slice of bread with the mustard cream.

  3. Place 2 slices of ham, one slice of Gruyère, and a bit of grated Emmental on top.

  4. Add another slice of bread spread with the mustard cream on both sides, followed by another layer of 2 slices of ham, Gruyère, and Emmental. Finish with a final slice of bread spread with the mustard cream.

  5. Press down firmly on the sandwich to compress it.

  6. Beat the eggs with the milk.

  7. When ready to cook:
Dip the sandwich on all sides into the egg mixture.

  8. In a skillet over medium-low heat, melt the butter with the oil. Cook the sandwich on all sides, applying pressure with a spatula. Cook until golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.

  9. Serve immediately with maple syrup.

Enjoy!
